Friday Wrap: Win for Women, tie for Men on ice

Friday Wrap: Win for Women, tie for Men on ice

No. 15-ranked St. Thomas Men's Hockey used an extra-attacker goal in the final minute of regulation to avert a loss, and eventually took a 3-3 tie Friday night on home ice in Mendota Heights.

With a new 3x3 second-overtime format in place for conference games, the Tommies' Brett Gravelle connected on a top-shelf goal to end the new sudden-death 5:00 shootout overtime period. That gave the second point to UST while St. Mary's claimed one.

Earlier, Elijah Latimer scored with 46 seconds to go to tie the score 3-3. After a scoreless 5:00 first overtime, Gravelle scored early in what's essentially a fifth period. Had no teams scored in those 5:00, a traditional shootout would have been used to determine the second point.

Gravelle and Gavin Payne scored second-period goals to lift the Toms into a 2-1 advantage. But the Cards scored twice in a 45-second span early in period three to regain the lead.

Andrew Rohkohl stopped 21 shots in 64-plus minutes for the Tommies (2-0-1 overall, 0-0-1 MIAC). Nick Nast had 35 saves for SMU (0-2-1, 0-0-1).

The teams play again Saturday night in Winona.

Women's Hockey

No. 10-ranked St. Thomas Women's Hockey rode another strong defensive game in a 2-1 road victory at UW-Stevens Point Friday night.

Chloe McEnelly and Maddy Fiedler scored for the Tommies (3-0), who never trailed and outshot the Pointers 30-10. Kenzie Torpy stopped nine shots in goal.

Torpy and her teammates have allowed only one goal in their last four games dating back to last February.

Shae McLean and Alyssa Wallace recorded assists.

The teams play again Saturday afternoon in Stevens Point.

St. Thomas won Friday night home dual meets against Carleton at Anderson Pool on both the women's and men's sides. The Tommie women won 11 of 16 events while the UST men won 15 of 16.

St. Thomas competes again Saturday in a home dual meet against St. Olaf.
