Freshman George Marty recorded his first college goal with 40 seconds left in regulation time as the host Tommies (9-3-1 overall, 4-2-1 MIAC) edged the visiting Concordia-Moorhead Cobbers (4-8, 0-6) Wednesday in a conference men's soccer contest at South Field.
With under 70 seconds remaining until a potential overtime session, Concordia's attack earned a foul and a free kick. The entry kick just outside and to the right of the box was deflected, and the Tommies stormed upfield with a counter attack.
UST's Jonathan Acevedo took a long pass and brought the ball all the way down the west sideline. He dished to Marty in the box, who connected into the bottom left side of the net for the game's only goal.
The Toms had a big advantage in shots on goal and corner kicks, but the Cobber goalie knocked away a few good chances to keep the game tied.
St. Thomas plays non-conference games Friday evening at Northwestern-St. Paul and Sunday afternoon at St. Scholastica. It resumes MIAC play Oct. 20 at St. Olaf.
