Program Overview

St. Thomas annually fields competitive tennis teams with accomplished individuals. Terry Peck coached the Tommie men and women's teams for 25-plus seasons.

St. Thomas has made the MIAC playoffs 11 of the last 12 seasons. 

St. Thomas’ 2016-17 top doubles team of Luke Elifson and Martin Beck advanced to the fall ITA nationals and earned All-America honors.

In 2010, St. Thomas moved into new on-campus indoor courts in the Anderson Athletics and Recreation Center. UST is also studying options for new outdoor courts on its south campus. St. Thomas also plays several matches five miles away at the University of Minnesota Baseline courts.

UST men’s tennis has approximately 12-15 members. The Tommies take an annual spring trip to Hilton Head, S.C. They also play the best teams from Minnesota, Wisconsin and Iowa.

St. Thomas has a strong academic tradition, with two CoSIDA Academic All-America recipients in the last 18 seasons, and numerous Academic All-MIAC and ITA academic honors.


Recent Success

The 2010 Tommies finished with an 11-6 dual-meet record and had four players named All-MIAC.

In 2011, the Toms finished third in the conference with an overall record of 15-4 (7-2 MIAC). All four losses came in matches against regionally-ranked teams. Senior Matt Bergstrom received the Arthur Ashe Award, which is given annually to a senior tennis student-athlete with outstanding sportsmanship and exemplary athletic, academic, and humanitarian accomplishments. The 2011 team also had three players honored as All-MIAC selections – Andrew Michels, Grant Bakke and Brian McCarthy. The Tommies closed the season ranked 15th in Central Region rankings.

The 2012 and 2013 Toms reached the conference playoff semifinals and won 11 matches each season. The 2013 team has six All-MIAC honorees.

The 2014 Tommies had a young team with four freshmen in their lineup and posted a 10-6 record.

The 2015 and 2016 teams both won 11 matches and made it to the conference playoff semifinals.
