The Tommie men and women opened their 2018 indoor track and field seasons Friday with a non-team scored meet in Anderson Fieldhouse.

Athletes from UST, the University of Minnesota, St. Olaf, Gustavus, Bethel, Hamline, St. Catherine, St. Scholastica, UW-Superior and UW-River Falls as well as some unattached and alumni individuals competed.

St. Thomas won five events and had six runner-up finishes on the women's side. Katie Murray won the 200 dash; Kendall Novak won the pole vault; Grace Bordson won the high jump; Hannah Helstad won the 600 and anchored the winning 4x400 relay with Anna Smith, Keely Smith and Brielle Bierman.

St. Thomas won four events and had nine runner-up finishes on the men's side. They were led by Nick Spann's wins in the long jump and triple jump, Eric Holst's victory in the weight throw, and Conor White's close win in the 60 dash over teammate Christopher Reiss.

Holst threw 59-5 and teammate Austin Jochum, placed second in 57-0, and those weight throws rank Nos. 5-6 so far early on the 2018 Division III season list.

Senior Connor O'Neill, who is competing unattached this indoor season, won the pole vault in 15-5.

UST will have a smaller home meet next Friday Jan. 19 in Anderson Fieldhouse.
