Junior Karl Wachter (25:31) placed third in a field of 298 finishers and St. Thomas Men's Cross Country put five in the top 20 and placed second at Saturday's Dan Huston Invite at Wartburg College in Waverly.

Wartburg won the 19-team field with 35 points. St. Thomas had 77, Loras took third at 98 and Cornell had 114 for fourth. Those four teams came into the meet ranked 2-6-5-4 in the region, and Wartburg is No. 15 nationally while Cornell is No. 31, Loras is No. 35 and UST is unranked.

Wachter was one of 12 Toms to break 28:00 and close in the top 110:


"It's a great start to the competitive season," said Tommie coach Pete Wareham. "We want to emerge as a national caliber program and we beat two nationally ranked teams.

"While it was a terrific start, we recognize how important the next four weeks are with respect to preparing ourselves for championship races. I believe our leadership and team attitude will rise to the challenge as we look ahead."


Women's CC

No. 32-ranked St. Thomas took second of 11 teams in women's D-III race at Saturday's U of M Gopher Griak Invite. No. 25-ranked Nebraska Wesleyan won with 32 points. UST had 62, UW-River Falls was third with 87.

UST junior Martha Hubbell took fifth in 23:48. Freshman Olivia Moll was eighth in 23:51, and senior Amber Matzoll was 10th in 23:53. 

Five other Tommies placed in the top 45:

  • junior Becca Wilkin took 19th (24:14);
  • junior Molly Clarke was 20th (24:15);
  • sophomore Carly Scheuerman was 27th (24:27);
  • freshman Caroline Johnson was 37th (24:52);
  • sophomore Anna Kroll was 42nd (24:58).
