Carleton, St. Thomas and St. Olaf placed 1-2-3 in the MIAC Championships races on both the men's and women's sides Saturday at the Carleton campus in Northfield.
On the men's side, No. 30-ranked Carleton won with 50 points to outscore closest pursuers No. 29-ranked St. Thomas with 63, and No. 19 St. Olaf at 69.
It was the best conference team placing for Coach Pete Wareham's runners since a 2012 runner-up finish. His last six Tommie teams had placed either third or fourth.
Senior Karl Wachter (25:05) placed third in a field of 216 runners and claimed his third All-MIAC honor (top-15 finish).
Senior George McGivern took ninth (25:30), improving 35 spots and 1:55 on the watch from his 2018 conference 8K finish when he placed 44th in 27:25.
Sophomore Biel Wiel placed 13th (25:47) and improved 11 spots and 56 seconds from last season. Freshman Zach Haire gave the Purple a huge lift as he placed 16th (26:00) and was the race's top freshman finisher.
On the women's side, No. 9-ranked Carleton (25), No. 14-ranked St. Thomas (68) and St. Olaf (79) placed 1-2-3.
Coach Joe Sweeney's Tommies had eight runners finish within 40 seconds and place in the top 26.
Sophomore Olivia Moll placed 11th in 22:33 to lead six Tommies finishing in the top 20. Sara Ness (22:33), Jenny Launder (22:36), Katie Breuckman (22:42), Sara Miller (22:47), Molly Clarke (22:55), Carly Scheuerman (23:21) and Martha Hubbell (23:13) were the Purple's next seven finishers.
