Softball keeps rolling, on to Sunday finals

Sophomore Hayley Dunning tossed a six-hitter to lead No. 7-ranked St. Thomas to a 3-1 win over St. Catherine in Saturday's winners'  bracket game at the MIAC Softball Playoffs at UST's South Field.

The top-seed Tommies (34-6) never trailed. They improved to 10-0 at home this season and have won 30 of their last 32 games.. They advanced to Sunday's 11 a.m. game against today's surviving team in the double-elimination tournament. If UST loses that game they will play a 1 p.m. rematch for the championship.

Elise Barnes led off the bottom of first inning with a home run to left. Sammy Hogan had an RBI single in the fourth inning, and Chase Shortly added a sac fly in the sixth. Barnes and Hogan each had two hits.

Dunning struck out five and stranded eight runners, all over the first six innings.

Krista Flugstad threw a seven-hitter and took the loss for third-seed SCU (26-14).

No. 2-seed St. Ben's plays an elimination game against No. 5-seed St. Olaf at 1:30 p.m. That victory plays St. Catherine at 4 p.m. in another elimination game.
