St. Thomas Women's Basketball is ranked No. 9 in the 2019-20 preseason poll by D3hoops.com. The Tommies are one of six teams to receive a first-place vote.
Coach Ruth Sinn starts her 15th season with a lot of changes. Her last eight teams have won 90 percent of their games (224-24), but her latest Tommie roster will go from one of the most veteran teams in D-III as a Final Four team last season to one of the nation's younger squads in 2019-20.
Sinn's 20-player roster will have no seniors, two juniors, nine sophomores, and nine freshmen.
Key graduation losses included two-time All-America center Hannah Spaulding and guards Lucia Renikoff and Kaylie Brazil. That trio were part of two Final Four teams and a 114-10 record.
The Tommies return just one starter in standout junior forward Kaia Porter, (13.4 ppg, 4.5 rpg, 77% FT) and just three others -- junior guard Macy Hatlestad and sophomore front-liners Brynne Rolland and Shayla Wallin -- among last season's top 12 contributors.
A variety of young players will get an immediate chance to crack the Purple's 12-player rotation.
St. Thomas plays a closed scrimmage on Nov. 2 against the Minnesota Gophers. The Toms then play five games before Thanksgiving, starting Nov. 9-10 with games in San Antonio against East Texas Baptist and Trinity.
The home opener is Nov. 20 against UW-Superior, and the first MIAC contest is Nov. 23 at St. Catherine.
