SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Tommie women's hoops held East Texas Baptist University to 40 points and scored a 54-40 win to open it's 2019-20 season.  The Tommies are back in action tomorrow against Trinity (Texas).

The warm Texas weather gave way to cool shooting percentages inside the Bell Center Saturday.  The Tommies held the Tigers to just 28.9-percent (13-45) for the afternoon, including a 7.7-percent (1-13) clip in the first quarter.  The strong defensive effort held the Tigers to just 15 first-half points as the Purple took a 20-15 lead into the half.

St. Thomas broke the game open in the third quarter.  After back-to-back buckets from the Tigers to cut the lead to one point (20-19), the Tommies finished the quarter on an incredible 18-2 run over the final 8:54 of the third.

The run gave St. Thomas a 38-21 advantage headed to the fourth, where the Tigers outscored the Tommies 19-16, but the damage was done in the 54-40 final.

St. Thomas held the East Texas Baptist offense in check all day, allowing a 28.9-percent (13-45) shooting clip from the field and just 6.7-percent (1-15) from three.  The Tommies converted on 37.3-percent (19-51) of their field goal attempts and 29.4-percent (5-17) from behind the arc.  They also assisted on 12 of 19 made field goals and outrebounded the Tigers 30-23.

Brynne Rolland led all scorers with 12 points and added six rebounds.  Shayla Wallin followed with 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting and pulled down five boards.

The Tommies will finish out the two-game trip to Texas tomorrow evening with a 6:00pm tip against host Trinity (Texas).
