MIAC news release

St. Thomas coach Tom Palkowski and senior goalie Kenzie Torpy received the top two awards on the Women's Hockey All-MIAC team announced Monday.

Palkowski was voted the league's Coach of the Year. He's guided St. Thomas to a 23-1-2 start; a repeat MIAC championship; the program's first No. 1 national ranking; and a program record for wins.

The 12-year head coach has the Tommies in the conference playoff title game for the fifth time in six seasons. He reached 200 victories in Saturday's 4-0 playoff win over Gustavus. That moved him to a 200-85-36 record (73-21-15 over the last four seasons). His St. Thomas teams have won four regular-season and four playoff crowns so far in the last six seasons.

Torpy has broken the MIAC record for career wins with her 23-1-2 mark this season, including 12 shutouts. She ranks in the top seven nationally in shutouts, goals-against average, and save percentage.

In 100 career games, Torpy is 67-18-12 with a 1.61 goals-against average and .927 save percentage.

Seven other Toms received honors:

  • Senior Demi Cooper (Career: 83 games, 13 goals, 28 assists) received her third career All-MIAC honor;
  • Making All-MIAC for the second time are senior Heidi Hannula (Career: 107 games, two goals, 20 assists); and junior Rachel Werdin (Career: 78 games, 37 goals, 26 assists).
  • Receiving their first All-MIAC awards are sophomores Alyssa Wallace (Career: 51 games, 17 goals, 26 assists); and Maddy Fiedler (Career: 51 games, 15 goals, 37 assists).
  • Sophomore Shae McLean (five goals, 14 assists) and freshman Anna Solheim (12 goals, eight assists) were among seven voted to the MIAC All-Rookie Team.

Fiedler's 25 assists are fourth most this season in Division III.

Werdin has scored 30 goals in her last 36 games. St. Thomas is 26-2-1 in games on her career when she scores a goal.
