Tight pack leads Women's CC to second

With four sophomores and a freshman in its top seven, St. Thomas Women's Cross Country took second place behind No. 13-ranked Carleton in Saturday's 14-team Running of the Cows 6K race at Carleton.

The Knights won with 28 points followed next by the Tommies (74) and Gustavus (96).

Sophomores Becca Wilkin (11th, 23:16) and Katie Breuckman (12th, 23:16) hit the line together and led a pack of six Tommies from 11th to 22nd place.

Jenny Launder (16th, 23:32), Melissa Marsh (17th, 23:33), Sara Ness (18th, 23:35), Jenny Walz (21st, 23:46), freshman Carly Scheuerman (27th, 24:00), Ali Glassbrenner (24:03), Amber Matzoll (24:04) and Megan Gossfeld (24:05) gave the Toms 10 runners closing in the top 36 in a field of 219 finishers.

The Tommies will have some athletes competing Oct. 14 at a Division III Pre-Nationals race in Elsah, Ill., and others at the UW-La Crosse Invite.
